Coronavirus (COVID-19) Impact on TN Visas

The following provides an overview of current and potential impacts on the TN visa classification due to the Coronavirus pandemic. As filing and travel restrictions are subject to change, please review all applicable agency information or speak with an attorney prior to traveling or filing your TN visa application.

Mexican Citizens - Suspended for Mexico beginning March 18, 2020.
Canadian Citizens -
- Border Filings - Available with some restrictions. Possible domestic travel restrictions and/or border closings may restrict these filings in the future.
- I-129/Mail-in Filings - Available. However, subject to above possible limitations when seeking entry to the U.S. with approved TN petition.

Mexican & Canadian Citizens - Currently permissible with valid TN visa documentation with some restrictions.
Possible travel restrictions and/or border closings may restrict the ability to travel and return to the U.S. in the future.

Mexican & Canadian Citizens - Permissible without filing new or amended applications provided work is for same employer, and no substantial changes to job duties.

Mexican Citizens - Available. An I-129 petition filing may be the only option available for Mexican citizens to extend/renew their TN status, or change to TN status, starting March 18, 2020.
Canadian Citizens - Available. If more severe travel restrictions are imposed, or the U.S. border is closed, an I-129 petition filing may be the only option available for Canadian citizens to extend/renew their TN visa status, or change to TN status.
