CBP Travel Tips for the Summer

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (“CBP”) has released helpful tips for U.S.-Canadian border travelers during the summer holidays. This document provides a valuable overview of the logistics involved in the first part of the admission process to the U.S. (primary inspection).

All applicants for TN visa status applying at the border, pre-flight inspection, or international U.S. airport must first go through the primary inspection process where preliminary inspection takes place and identification documents are reviewed. Applicants are then sent to secondary inspection where an interview on the merits of the TN visa application takes places. See CBP Q&A on Inspection Process.

The document also reminds Canadian citizens that they now must present proof of citizenship and identity to enter the United States at land and sea ports of entry. This can include a passport, trusted traveler program card (NEXUS), or a birth certificate with a driver’s license. Travelers 18 and under can present just a birth certificate. A passport has been required for all travelers entering and departing the United States by air since January 2007. See also CBP Travel Documentation Requirements.
