Implementation Date for Land/Sea Passport Rule Set for 2009

The final rule for the land and sea portion of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) will go into effect on June 1, 2009. The WHTI final rule requires travelers to present a passport or other approved secure document denoting citizenship and identity for all land and sea travel into the United States. This rule will affect Canadian citizens applying for TN visa status at land border port-of-entries. The final rule will be published in its entirety in the Federal Register shortly. Read USCIS Passport Notice.

To comply with this new rule, we recommend that Canadian citizens applying for a TN at the border  have a passport valid for the entire period of the proposed stay.
